Old Town's historic buildings invite San Diego visitors to compare the stories they tell
The state historic park uses museums, buildings and living-history programs to explore the cultures that shaped early San Diego.

Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is more than an attractive backdrop for an afternoon out. Its historic buildings, museums and living-history programs offer different ways to examine the people, work and cultural changes that shaped the city.
California State Parks describes a place of converging cultures, including Kumeyaay communities, the Mexican pueblo and the later American settlement. Use the interpretation to ask whose perspective a room or display presents and which period it is describing. A restored building and a reconstruction can each help explain the past, but they are different kinds of evidence.

The current park page lists the visitor center and selected museums as open 10 a.m.–5 p.m., with museum closures on Thanksgiving and Christmas. 'Selected' matters: a general park schedule is not a guarantee that every door will be open. Start with the official map and ask staff which buildings and demonstrations are available that day.
Choose a few stops and allow time to read rather than trying to cover every museum, shop and restaurant in the wider neighborhood. Organized tours and programs have separate arrangements. An unhurried visit can make the relationship between a domestic room, a workplace and the surrounding plaza more interesting than a checklist of historic facades.
