A drawing of a building can reveal what an architect chose to notice. The Timken Museum of Art's fall 2026 exhibition of Ernest Born's medieval-architecture studies brings that kind of focused attention to a free San Diego museum visit.
The museum describes more than twenty studies in ink, chalk, pastel and pencil, depicting subjects including abbeys, barns and parish churches. The exhibition opened October 7. Review the current exhibition listing for dates and related programs before planning a visit around the drawings.

The Timken is at 1500 El Prado in Balboa Park, with free admission and no general-entry ticket required. Current hours are Wednesday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., with holiday and special-event exceptions. The museum also offers free guided tours by arrangement, which have their own scheduling process and should not be assumed to begin whenever a visitor arrives.
Choose one drawing to study for a few minutes. Notice which lines establish structure, where shading creates depth and what remains unstated. Comparing the image with another work can make an architectural subject feel like a set of visual decisions rather than simply a record of an old building.
